National Squirrel Appreciation Day

1/3/2019

January 21st is National Squirrel Appreciation day.  Here are few fun facts about squirrels:

  1. The largest squirrel is the Indian Giant Squirrel and is about 3 feet long.
  2. The smallest squirrel is the African Pygmy and is only about 3” long and weighs less than a half ounce.
  3. Squirrels can smell a cashed food source under 1 foot of snow.
  4. Their back legs are double jointed and that allows them to go up or down a tree face first.
  5. They have four front teeth that grow constantly…on average about 6” per year!!!

There are over 250 species of squirrels in the world but the ones we deal with the most in Georgia are the grey squirrel and the flying squirrel.  Grey squirrels are notorious for chewing into the attic areas of homes. They will chew on almost anything. Like mentioned above their teeth grow at an alarming rate.  This continuous growth is what causes them to chew on things other than just food sources. We have seen homes where rafters and wall studs were rounded off due to chewing. We have also seen electrical wiring chewed through and even attic vent fans with chew damage to the aluminum fan blades.  We have even seen a suit case that had chew damage all the way around it!

If you hear scratching or chewing sounds in your attic, give us a call at 706-445-4300 to schedule your wildlife inspection.
